Coccidiosis is a parasite that primarily affects the birds' intestines. If the cocciciosis is in the lower intestine, we can see this in blood in the stool. If the coccidiosis is higher in the gut, the stool is black. Overall, it is also more watery. Small veins of blood can be seen at the bottom of the abdomen. This is the initial stage of coccidiosis. If this is not treated, the coccidiosis continues into the body. The gut is further affected and it goes to the brain.
Then it spreads through all other organs. During this process we see the bird become lean, because the intestines are affected and can absorb less food. The bird remains active, that is the insidious thing about coccidiosis, it is not easily noticed. Then we see the liver swell and turn dark red/purple. This continues until the liver is blue/black. The bird will then die. Any bird that is infected will not fertilize or lay eggs.
Coccidiosis is usually manifested in the moult and in growing young.
Previously, different types of antibiotics were available to treat coccidiosis . Unfortunately, these products are banned in the EU.
