Avian Vitamin A

From a nutritional perspective, vitamin A is one of the most likely of the vitamins that can cause deficiency in captive birds. The vitamin (retinol) is a fat-soluble vitamin and occurs in small amounts in the diet. Vitamin A ensures a good resistance. Many eye problems stem from a deficiency of this vitamin. In addition, a deficiency can cause a dull plumage.

Vitamin A is important for recessive birds, white canaries, blue goulds need an addition of this vitamin. Also known as the anti-infection vitamin. A deficiency can damage the skin (epithelium), mucous membranes of the beak, pharynx, esophagus and respiratory tract.

The symptoms of disease that occur depend on the organ system that is affected. Usually these are the lungs and airways, but the gastrointestinal tract and reproductive organs can also be involved in the disease process. Most symptoms develop gradually over weeks or even years. In addition to a deficiency of vitamin A, an excess of vitamin A can also cause the same symptoms. Offering a well-balanced diet is therefore very important to prevent these kinds of problems.

Vitamin A is also indispensable for rearing by the parents. A cause of death of young after 7 days is often a result of E.coli or a deficiency of vitamin A. The above symptoms can be counteracted by structurally providing the birds with vitamin A.

Hypovitaminosis A is a disease that arises, among other things, when recessive birds are fed with only seed mixtures. This makes birds more susceptible to harmful bacteria and other germs (such as fungi).
